How to Care for Embroidered Kids Frocks — The Complete Twirly Tutus Guide

by Ria Bhargava 15 Mar 2026

You've just received your Twirly Tutus frock — the hand-embroidered pearls are perfect, the satin is gleaming, and your daughter looks absolutely magical. Now comes the important question: how do you keep it looking this beautiful?

Hand-embroidered and embellished kids' frocks are special pieces — they're not like everyday clothes that you throw in the washing machine. With the right care, these frocks can last for years, be passed down to siblings, or even become keepsakes. With the wrong care, a single wash can ruin hundreds of hours of handwork in minutes.

This guide covers everything you need to know about caring for every type of Twirly Tutus frock — from our satin styles to our embroidered lycra tutus to our delicate organza pieces.

Golden rule — When in doubt, always choose the gentler option. It is far better to under-wash a frock than to over-wash it. Most embellished frocks only need spot cleaning between occasions — not a full wash every time.

Know Your Frock Type First

Different fabrics and embellishments need completely different care. Before doing anything, identify which type of frock you have:

Frock type Examples Care method
Satin with cotton lining Buttercup Belle, Blue Bell, Cherry Wonder, Carnation Bloom Gentle hand wash
Lycra with beads and sequins Carnation Dry clean only
Milano satin with pearl embroidery Cherry Wonder Dry clean only
White satin with hand-painting + sequins Jungle Dry clean only
Organza with 3D flower belt Daisy Dry clean only
Fabia satin with hand embroidery Bouquet, Daffodill, Aster Dry clean only
Net skirt with satin yoke Jasmine, Gipsy Rose Dry clean only

How to Hand Wash Satin Frocks

For our plain satin frocks without heavy embellishment — like Buttercup Belle, Blue Bell, and Carnation Bloom — gentle hand washing at home is perfectly safe. Follow these steps exactly:

Step 1 — Check for stains first

Before washing the whole frock, check for stains and treat them individually. For food stains, dab (never rub) a small amount of mild liquid detergent directly on the stain and let it sit for 5 minutes before washing. For oil-based stains (mithai, ghee), sprinkle a tiny amount of talcum powder on the stain and leave for 30 minutes to absorb the oil before washing. Rubbing a stain will spread it and damage satin fibres — always dab.

Step 2 — Prepare the wash water

Fill a clean basin or bucket with cold water — never warm or hot. Hot water causes satin to lose its sheen permanently. Add a capful of mild liquid detergent (Genteel or Ezee are ideal — never use regular Surf or Ariel as they are too harsh for delicate fabrics). Stir gently to dissolve. Do not pour undiluted detergent directly on the frock.

Step 3 — Wash gently

Submerge the frock completely. Gently swish it through the water using your hands — think of it as a gentle squeeze-and-release motion. Do not wring, twist, scrub, or rub the fabric. Pay gentle attention to the neckline and underarm areas. The entire wash should take no more than 3–4 minutes.

Step 4 — Rinse thoroughly

Empty the basin and refill with clean cold water. Rinse the frock by gently submerging and swishing. Repeat 2–3 times until all detergent is gone — leftover detergent leaves a residue that dulls satin. Never rinse under a running tap at full pressure.

Step 5 — Remove water without wringing

Lift the frock out of the water and hold it up to let excess water drip off naturally. Never wring or twist — this permanently distorts the shape of the skirt. Then lay the frock flat on a clean dry towel, roll the towel up gently with the frock inside, and press (do not wring) to absorb excess moisture.

Step 6 — Dry correctly

Hang the frock on a padded hanger — never a wire hanger which creates shoulder bumps. Dry in the shade, never in direct sunlight. Direct sun fades satin colours and weakens fibres over time. Allow to dry naturally — never use a tumble dryer or hold a hairdryer close to the fabric.

Never machine wash any Twirly Tutus frock. Even a gentle cycle creates enough friction and spin to damage satin fibres, pull out embellishments, and permanently distort the shape of the skirt. Not even in a laundry bag. Always hand wash or dry clean.

Why Embellished Frocks Need Dry Cleaning

Our Carnation, Cherry Wonder, Jungle, Daisy, Bouquet, Daffodill, and Aster frocks all require dry cleaning. Here's exactly why — and what happens if you wash them at home instead.

Pearls and beads fall off in water

The pearl and bead embellishments on Cherry Wonder and Carnation are hand-sewn with fine thread. Water weakens the thread holding each embellishment in place. Even gentle hand washing can cause them to come loose, and once they start going, others follow. Dry cleaning uses solvent-based cleaning that does not affect the thread tension.

Sequins and beads lose their coating

The sequins on Carnation and Jungle have a metallic or iridescent coating that is water-soluble. Washing them in water causes the coating to peel off, leaving dull, discoloured patches. After just one home wash, you can see the difference — the sequins lose their shine and the frock never looks the same again.

Hand-painted designs wash away

The Jungle frock has hand-painted detailing that uses fabric paint cured onto the satin. While fabric paint is water-resistant once cured, repeated home washing with detergent gradually lifts the paint over time. Dry cleaning preserves the integrity of the painted design wash after wash.

3D flowers and organza structures collapse

The 3D flower belt on Daisy and the structural organza layers in our net frocks are shaped and set during manufacturing. Water collapses the structure — the flowers go flat, the organza loses its volume, and the frock never regains its original shape even when dried. Only dry cleaning preserves these three-dimensional elements.

How to Iron a Kids' Frock Without Ruining It

Creases are inevitable — especially after washing or storage. Here's how to safely iron each frock type:

Satin frocks (Buttercup Belle, Blue Bell, Carnation Bloom)

Always iron satin on the reverse side (inside out). Use the lowest heat setting on your iron — satin melts and scorches at high temperatures, and the damage is permanent and irreversible. Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric (called a pressing cloth). Never iron directly on satin. Use slow, gentle strokes — do not press hard or hold the iron in one place.

Embellished frocks (Carnation, Cherry Wonder, Jungle)

Do not iron these frocks at home. The heat from an iron melts sequins, deforms plastic beads, and can scorch pearls. If your dry-cleaned frock comes back with creases, take it back to the dry cleaner and ask them to press it — they have the right equipment to steam-press without touching the embellishments.

The hanging method — best for most frocks

The easiest way to remove light creases from any frock without risking damage is to hang it in the bathroom while you run a hot shower. The steam gently relaxes the fibres and most creases fall out naturally within 15–20 minutes. This works especially well for satin frocks and is completely safe for embellished ones too.

How to Store Kids' Frocks Correctly

Correct storage is just as important as correct washing. A frock stored wrong for six months can come out looking older than one that has been worn ten times.

Always wash or dry clean before storing

Never store a worn frock without cleaning it first — even if it looks clean. Body oils, sweat, and invisible food particles attract silverfish and other fabric pests. They also oxidise over time, causing yellowing and permanent stains that are impossible to remove later.

Use a breathable garment bag

Store frocks in the breathable cotton garment bag they arrive in, or in a muslin dust bag. Never store in plastic bags or airtight containers — trapped moisture causes mildew and yellowing. For extra protection, place a small cotton sachet of lavender or cloves inside the bag to deter insects naturally.

Hang light frocks, fold heavy ones

Light satin frocks can be hung on padded hangers. Heavy embellished frocks (Carnation, Cherry Wonder, Jungle) should be folded flat and stored in a drawer or box — the weight of the embellishments can pull and distort the fabric if hung for long periods. When folding, place acid-free tissue paper between layers to prevent colour transfer and creasing.

Keep away from direct light

Store frocks in a dark wardrobe away from windows. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or even artificial light causes colours to fade — especially pastels like the yellow of Buttercup Belle and the blue of Blue Bell. If storing in an open wardrobe, cover with a cotton sheet.

Emergency Stain Guide — What to Do in the Next 2 Minutes

Birthday parties, weddings, and Diwali celebrations always come with stain risk. Here's what to do the moment a stain happens — speed matters more than anything else:

Stain type Immediate action Then do this
Food / mithai Blot with dry cloth — do not rub Dry clean as soon as possible
Oil / ghee Sprinkle talcum powder immediately Leave 30 mins, brush off gently, dry clean
Colour / rangoli Do not wet — blot only Dry clean immediately — do not attempt home removal
Drink / juice Blot with dry cloth immediately Hand wash (satin only) or dry clean
Mud / dust Let it dry completely first Brush off dried mud gently, then dry clean
Ink / pen Do not rub or wet Dry clean only — home treatments spread ink on satin

The most important rule for any stain — Never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain wider, pushes it deeper into the fibres, and can pull out embellishments on decorated frocks. Always blot gently with a clean dry cloth and get it to a dry cleaner as quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Comfort or fabric softener on a satin frock?

Avoid fabric softener on satin. It coats the fibres and reduces the natural sheen that makes satin beautiful. For a softer feel after washing, add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the final rinse water — it naturally softens fabric without affecting the finish.

The frock came out of storage smelling musty. What do I do?

Hang the frock outdoors in the shade (not direct sun) for a few hours — fresh air removes light musty smells. For persistent smells, the steam-in-bathroom method works well. If the smell is very strong or you see any mildew spots, take it to a dry cleaner immediately — mildew spreads and can permanently damage fabric.

One of the pearls/beads has come loose. Can I fix it at home?

Yes — use a needle and strong polyester thread (the same type used for embroidery). Sew the bead or pearl back in place with 3–4 tight stitches, then knot securely on the reverse side. If you are not confident with a needle, any local tailor can do this in 5 minutes for free or a minimal charge. Do not use fabric glue — it stiffens the fabric and looks wrong.

How often should I clean a frock my daughter only wears occasionally?

For frocks worn once or twice a year for special occasions — clean after each wear before storing, even if it looks clean. For frocks worn more regularly, spot clean between full washes. Never store a worn frock without cleaning — the invisible residues cause long-term damage in storage.
